Just 40 km away from Licata, the beautiful Valle dei Templi is located in Agrigento.
Valle dei Templi is a Sicilian archaeological site characterized by the outstanding state of preservation and by a series of noteworthy doric temples from the Hellenic period.
It corresponds to the ancient Akragas, a monumental nucleus of Agrigento. Since the year 2000, it has been the regional archaeological site.
Since 1997 the entire area has been established as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It has been recognized as a sought-after tourist destination, as well as the symbol not only of the city but of the entire island.
Most of the early excavations and restorations were conducted by the archaeologist Domenico Antonio Lo Faso Pietrasanta (1783 – 1863), Duke of Serradifalco in the years 1809-1812. During the twentieth century, the excavations and restorations were mainly funded by Sir Alexander Hardcastle. This made it possible to perform the excavation works inside the site, including the straightening of the eight columns on the southern side of the Temple of Heracles. For his contributions to archaeology, he has been appointed honorary citizen of Agrigento and awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy.
